How to react when you are interrupted:
Stick to your schedule and communicate clearly and assertively when you are
unavailable. You will be surprised at how much you will get done and also at
how much extra quality time you will have available to do things well and
uninterrupted.
You need to communicate assertively. In this instance it would be to
communicate a time frame and to strike a balance between controlling
interruptions and staying informed about what is going on.
Example:
Hi! Have you
got a minute?
Assertive reply:
1. “Not now, unless it’s urgent.”
2. “I am available between 2.15 and 2.30 this afternoon if it can wait until
then.”
3. “I have seven minutes to see you right now.”
