Let’s use an analogy:
Imagine, for a moment, that you are a car. If you
are in danger, your motor will rev, providing
extra energy so that you can pull away, tyres
screeching, and escape the threat. Thus, the
energy is used up in action. But if the threat is
not physical and no action is needed, what happens? The engine still revs,
and revs, and revs … until the motor burns out. This is what can happen to
people too. We even refer to it as “burn-out”.
There are four stages of burn-out. The scale which follows describes the
symptoms of each of those stages. Study them closely; so that you will
recognise them in yourself should you ever reach burn-out point.
Burn-out Scale
Stage One:
Description: Energetic but increasingly lacking in confidence
Symptoms: Energy, enthusiasm, overwork, uncertainty, doubts about coping,
frustration with results, cancelling holidays.
Stage Two:
Description: First signs of anxiety
